Universal Bonsai Tree Soil Mixture

Hello Everybody! Today, I will be showing you my universal bonsai tree soil mixture and how to make it. I use this mix for some of my indoor trees along with some of my outdoor trees as well. The indoor bonsai that are using this soil mixture are my Podocarpus, Royal Poinciana, Jacaranda, and Meyer Lemon trees. The two outdoor bonsai that are using this soil mixture are my Juniper and Crepe Myrtle. I switched to using this inorganic soil mixture a few weeks ago and have had no complaints so far. It is pretty straightforward to make but getting all of the ingredients can be a bit tricky.

Ingredients

This soil mixture is comprised of the following ingredients in four parts:

• 1 part Akadama
• 1 part Pumice
• 1 part Black Lava Rock
• 1 part Organic Soil

Depending on personal preference, you can add more organic soil to your mixture than described above. The main difference between having varying amounts of organic soil is how well the medium retains water. The more organic soil you add to the mixture, the longer it will retain water. The less organic soil you add to the mixture, the shorter it will retain water. If you are comfortable with watering your plants about twice a week, use 1 part organic soil in your mix. If that is too much watering for you, use more than 1 part organic soil.

Acquirement

Acquiring all of these ingredients can be a bit difficult. I was not able to find a single place that sold everything I needed. I ended up being able to get the Pumice and Organic Soil off of Amazon, the Black Lava Rock off of Etsy, and the Akadama off of eBay.

How to Make Soil Mixture for Tropical Bonsai Trees

The hardest part of making a soil mixture for bonsai trees is getting all the ingredients. Once you have all of those, it’s as simple as dumping everything into a bin and mixing it all together. Once everything looks evenly dispersed, you’re good to go! The mixture is good to be used right away or it can be put into a bag and stored for later use.

Final Results and Considerations

I have been using this soil mixture in my tropical bonsai trees for a few weeks now and I have no complaints. Before using a mainly inorganic soil mixture (like this one), I was using entirely organic soil. My trees have been growing just fine in both types of mediums, however, I have noticed that the trees require water a lot more frequently in the inorganic mix. This hasn’t been a problem for me since I have been able to water my plants on a consistent schedule but I do wonder how this could affect my plants while I am away on vacation. But, that’s a problem for another day!
