I am super excited for todays job! I will be doing a Golden Gate Ficus grouping repotting along with repotting one of my larger cuttings. Once again, I will be utilizing the round brown pot I got in Hong Kong a while back. I have been shuffling this pot around a lot recently but I think this will be its final destination. The largest of the Golden Gate Ficus cutting will also be joining in the action as it’s time to place it in the new inorganic soil mixture!

Golden Gate Ficus Grouping and Small Cutting Repotting

Golden Gate Ficus Grouping and Small Cutting Repotting

Grouping

Once again, this little grouping and pot are back on the stage. This is by far my favorite grouping I’ve made. The height of these two trees compliment each other perfectly and when the larger one is buried, slightly in the soil, it looks like a grouping of three. These bonsai look great when viewed from any angle which is why I am choosing a round pot for them to be showcased in. The longer I stare at this grouping, the more I start to think this will be their final spot. As far as the repotting goes, these guys are always a breeze to deal with. Luckily, they haven’t had enough time for their roots to get all tangled together so I can still pull them apart. The next time I dig these up, I don’t think that’ll be the case.

Individual

I can’t let the cute little grouping steal the show! This larger Golden Gate Ficus cutting is one of the oldest and biggest cuttings I own. This was actually the first large branch I cut off my large Golden Gate Ficus specimen and I really didn’t want to throw it away. It’s still kicking today but I have yet to style or shape this bonsai. This lack of attention has caused it to develop an interesting lanky shape. All of the leaves are at the tips of the branches and thanks to phototropism, the branches sway all over the place. I have been thinking about cutting off all the branches and making those into new cuttings while letting this main tree regrow and reshape. The root structure of this cutting is superb and I would hate for it to go to waste.

Final Results and Considerations

Both of these repottings went about as smoothly as they could go. I am super excited for the grouping to grow together and develop a denser canopy. I am still debating what I want to do with the larger cutting but I think I will have a decision by this upcoming spring. So stay tuned for all the pruning and styling videos coming soon!
