Exciting news! I am here to update you about my Royal Poinciana tree’s growth. In a little over a week, this bonsai has started to drop its feeder leaves and develop another offshoot of canopy growth! This tree has been developing very rapidly and it feels like something new is happening almost every day.

New Developments

Since the last post, about the Royal Poinciana re-potting, this bonsai has grown slightly taller and has started to develop two new offshoots of growth. These new branches, full of tiny green leaves, look so cool because they are a miniature version of the other branches on the tree. One of these offshoots can be seen clearly, while the other is still brand new and remains too small to be seen. If these new branches behave like the first one, they should be fully grown in within a week’s time.

The second thing that has started to change on this tree are its feeder leaves. These are the very first two leaves that a tree grows. Normally, these leaves do not look like the other leaves on the tree. The plant uses them to gather sunlight and nutrients while the plant is still brand new and sheds them once it starts to develop. Since this bonsai has started to develop a nice canopy, it no longer requires the use of its feeder leaves. These leaves has started to turn yellow and are wilting extremely hard. I have decided that I will remove these, since they are unneeded, and recorded the process for you below.

Final Result and Considerations

Removing the feeder leaves turned out to be really easy and I was please with the final result. Both leaves were removed successfully with no damage to the tree. Additionally, this tree continues to develop at a steady rate. Every few days, a new branch is starting to emerge from the top of the trunk and slowly spread out to take full shape. I will start to consider introducing fertilizer to this Royal Poinciana since it has been growing so fast. This tree is only a month old, yet, it has quickly flourished into looking quite older than some of my other cuttings that are over a year old.

Tree Seeds: First Batch Update 9/15/20 : Small Tree Leaf · September 18, 2020 at 7:55 pm

[…] Originally, I planted two Royal Poinciana tree seeds. Only one ended up germinating, however, it has been growing extremely fast and is by far the most successful seedling. I have started to post about this tree separately since it has gotten so large and will no longer post about it in the tree seed updates. If you haven’t already, check out the posts about the Royal Poinciana re-potting and the growth update! […]
