Hello Everybody! I’m back from a small break and today’s focus will be my large Chinese Yew cutting repotting. This Podocarpus cutting is the largest of the bunch even though it’s not the oldest. A little strange that this one grows way faster than all the other Chinese Yew cuttings but that’s more of a praise than anything.
Large Podocarpus Cutting Repotting
This is one of my favorite Podocarpus cuttings! Some day I will style this bonsai to be cascading down and out of its pot, but for now I’ll only focus on the repotting. This whole process went smoothly and the potting mix I used made it a breeze to get situated back in the pot. Given that this is the fastest growing Chinese Yew bonsai I own, I’m super excited to see the form it begins to take.
Root Ball
The roots on this bonsai are pretty impressive if you ask me. They all sprout out from the center of the trunk and form a nice circle around the base of the tree. This allows for the tree to hold itself up during the repotting and it ensures an even flow of nutrients from the roots to the trunk. Some time soon, I expect the thickness of the trunk to start rapidly expanding. Especially with the root pruning done not too long ago. Be on the lookout for more posts about this Chinese Yew cutting soon!
Final Results and Considerations
I couldn’t have asked for a much of an easier job today! This large Chinese Yew cutting repotting only took around 10 minutes and the new medium it’s in should promote even faster growth. Podocarpus trees are known for how slowly they grow but this cutting is breaking that mold. With progress like this, I am starting to think I will be able to start a cascading bonsai much earlier than I anticipated!
