Desert Bonsai Tree and Succulent Soil Mixture

Hello Everybody! Today, I will be showing you my desert bonsai tree and succulent soil mixture and how to make it. I use this mix for my Desert Rose, Spider Plants, Snake Plants, Fern, Aloe, and some Cacti. I switched to using this inorganic soil mixture a while ago and have had no complaints so far. It is pretty straightforward to make but getting all of the ingredients can be a bit tricky.

Ingredients

This soil mixture is comprised of the following ingredients in five parts:

  • 1 part Akadama
  • 1 part Pumice
  • 1 part Pine Bark
  • 1 Part Haydite
  • 1 part Organic Soil

Depending on personal preference, you can add more organic soil to your mixture than described above. The main difference between having varying amounts of organic soil is how well the medium retains water. The more organic soil you add to the mixture, the longer it will retain water. The less organic soil you add to the mixture, the shorter it will retain water. If you are comfortable with watering your plants about twice a week, use 1 part organic soil in your mix. If that is too much watering for you, use more than 1 part organic soil.

Acquirement

Acquiring all of these ingredients can be a bit difficult. I was not able to find a single place that sold everything I needed. I ended up being able to get the Pumice and Organic Soil off of Amazon, the Pine Bark and Haydite off of Etsy, and the Akadama off of eBay.

How to Make Soil Mixture for Desert Bonsai Trees and Succulents

The hardest part of making a soil mixture for bonsai trees is getting all the ingredients. Once you have all of those, it’s as simple as dumping everything into a bin and mixing it all together. Once everything looks evenly dispersed, you’re good to go! The mixture is good to be used right away or it can be put into a bag and stored for later use.

Final Results and Considerations

I have been using this soil mixture for my desert bonsai and succulents for a while now and actually can report that this mix is better than using just organic soil as a medium. This mix tends to dry out much faster than straight organic soil and desert plants usually prefer drier soil anyways. I have noticed that the desert like plants I’ve used this mix on have grown significantly faster than the ones planted in the usual organic soil.
